The 20-year-old star, who will be on UK screens in the much-anticipated Emilio Estevez film Bobby later this month, said she had made the decision for the good of her health.
"I have made a proactive decision to take care of my personal health," she said in a statement released by her publicist, Leslie Sloane Zelnick.
"I appreciate your well wishes and ask that you please respect my privacy at this time."
Lohan has been on the front pages of late as a result of her late-night partying with fellow A-list celebs, Britney Spears and Paris Hilton.
She also revealed last month that she had been going to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings for a year, telling People magazine that she no longer drank alcohol when she went out to nightclubs.
According to a source, Lohan arrived at the Wonderland Centre in Los Angeles' Laurel Canyon yesterday afternoon.
She is said to have turned up in a black SUV vehicle carrying a dark Balenciaga bag and a Jamba Juice drink.
Lohan first broke into Hollwood as an 11-year-old when she starred in The Parent Trap and has since appeared in films such as Freaky Friday, A Prairie Home Companion and Herbie Fully Loaded.
